Frances and a companion were picking mushroom near Kitseguelca Road area near Smithers, British Columbia. The two became separated and when Frances did not return to their vehicle her companion searched the area for some time before notifying the police. At 9:20 PM the police were called and soon dispatched to the area. Frances was reported to have appropriate clothing, rain gear, long johns, hiking boots and a lighter on her person. Smithers RCMP searched the area occasionally turning on their lights and sirens hoping to alert Frances that they were there. There evening temperatures were mild with light drizzle to moderate rain. The following morning, Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue, a helicopter and Terrace RCMP Police Dog Service joined the search. There was evidence of a small camp fire but no sign of Frances. The official search lasted for 7 days including Bulkley Valley SAR and their helicopter, 21 other SAR teams, a dog handler, trackers, RCMP Helicopter Terrace Detachment Dog Member, Smithers Detachement Member on site daily. There was no sign of Frances aside from the one small camp fire. RCMP called off the official search on October 23rd 2017, The investigation is still open and the family continued their search until November 14th 2017 when the weather became too cold to search.
